O’Shaughnessy, Michael 2012, ‘Globalisation’, in Media and society, 5th ed, Oxford University Press, South Melbourne, Vic, pp. 458-471

Chapter 25 of the text Globalisation (2012), written by Michael O’Shaughnessy, effectively communicates the importance of globalisation and its constantly evolving nature. 

The relevancy of the topic is demonstrated in this text with the acknowledgement of economic, political, military interests and new technologies. 

The author further explores technological innovation and its power to grow global interrelatedness. This is done as the text connects technological advances to the key elements such as instantaneity, interconnectedness and interdependence. 

The internet is accessible by many, therefore information can be found instantly. Interconnectedness is also recognisable within the “Global Village”, as explored by Marshall McLuhan. ‘Globalisation’ accurately incorporates McLuhans concept of a Global Village. It was believed that the technological advantages such as the internet have brought people closer together, without the individual having to be physically present. 

 Although, the text also explores the dystopian view, finding that the “gap between the richest and poorest has worsened”. The text then connects this theory with technological advances, stating that “ For those who do not have access to the internet, media globalisation can be a powerful mechanism of social exclusion”. O’Shaughnessy refers to this as the “digital divide” between cultures. The internet has made a dramatic effect on the global economy and ultimately global imperialism. Global imperialism refers to the rate of which a cultures morals and values develop.

Social media is an element of Globalisation and therefore it is important to recognise the positive and negative is has. Allison Graham’s TED Talk “How Social Media Makes Us Unsocial”, explores the dystopian view of social media practices in communication. 

The “Global Village” is a concept created by Marshall McLuhan, to describe how a life online can connect people through social media. However, Graham discusses times where she has observed families out to dinner and all on their phones. She also discusses how social media has shortened people’s vocabulary. The effect on the English language may further be reiterated when the Oxford Dictionary chose ‘selfie’ as word of the year in 2013 (Holden R 2013). However, other studies suggest it is building the English language at a much faster pace (Lynn, K n.d).  

Allison Graham’s TED Talk discusses the element of negative effects social media has within globalisation. However, it is important to recognise there are many beneficial practices of social media as well. The lack of access to technology, may effect the rate of Globalisation. Social media does allow for cultures to have access to instant communication and information. 

In relation to Michael O’Shaughnessy (2012), “ for those who do not have access to the internet, media globalisation can be a powerful mechanism of social exclusion”.

For globalisation to evolve in a positive and equal rate, it is necessary for all cultures to have access to the same media practices. However, some challenges brought forward by social media can be deadly.
